I can also pick which batches of stocks I can trade (a single purchase makes a batch, so over the years you'll have some long term some short term investments instead of just seeing it as a single cumulative # of stocks). So you can choose to trade the ones that gained the most or the ones that matured the most... etc. Some discount brokers only do FIFO. (First come [purchased] first out).
Lets say you have stocks purchased in June, July and August. Now you want to sell positions opened in July. Or you just want to sell the ones you purchased last week - You can pick the batch.
This service was available only if you'd call your broker and he'd trade specific stocks for you. (Trades by direct call cost about $35) Now most of e-brokers allow you to do it on site by yourself, so you just pay regular price.
